Our last

game tomorrow, pretty much a non event for yours truly, ain't going, decided that last week. I know we still have a chance but as far as I'm concerned that particular boat has sailed but, I'd love to be proved wrong, what do you think? We already have our first two pre season friendlies lined up, can't remember exact dates, July, but it's Raith at home and Blyth Spartans away. The sort of return for the one at Shielfield this season. Did you watch the two games last night, great performance from Fulham, imagine them being the last London club in Europe, great stuff. While over at Anfield we had Dick Kuyt, spelling? flinging himself to the ground quicker than a whore's nickers. I'd introduce a new rule, anyone caught doing that in future has to stand stock still whilst the player they tried to get into bother can punch them full in the face, then they can fall on the ground and roll around thumping their hands on the turf whilst hiding their face in the same grass, notice how they always do that?

Eyemouth 1-1 Leith Athletic

Made my second visit in just over a week to Warner Park Eyemouth last night to catch the Fishermen against the lads from my old stomping ground in Leith. Like the week before Eyenouth were up against a top five side and again they e quited themselves well. Some of their passing and movement of the ball was quite impressive better than last week in my humble opinion. Was interested as well to watch our ex striker Steve Rad......, couldn't spell his name when he was with us and still can't, but you know who I mean. Didn't impress I'm afraid and was clearly frustrated with himself which he didn't hide. Maybe if United can maintain this they can start next season in better form and get a better run going. Good luck to them. Much more pleasant evening as well, weather wise, made for a much more enjoyable experience. That Himooth wund can be a bugger, they breed em tough there you know!

Been having

a wee pore over things fiscal today, old news really but I didn't look at it much when it came out, last week I think. It concerns our friends at Fratton Park and the situation they're in. Their debt has come in at something like £200 million, yes £200 million. That's akin to the national debt of some African countries, and that from a club that regularly fail to get 20000 into their ground. Apparently they spent......wait for it...192% of income on players wages. Ye, I know I had to think about it as well! They were basically spending twice as much as they were earning on their players wages alone, and that before they looked at any other wages or bills. Remember to they made 300 odd of the plebs redundant a while back. One particular point that astonished me, more than the rest I mean was £1.96 million owed to agents. I ask you... Just who was responsible for this debt building up and what will be done about them? How about nowt I'd say but no matter Portsmouth are still playing and the players are still being paid, even if nobody else is.

I was

informed today of a sad passing on Saturday past, that of George Christie, he of THAT team who beat Glasgow Rangers more than four decades now. The sad news came from a friend of Georges son and it's certainly fitting that it is mentioned on anything to do with Berwick Rangers Football Club. George played for the club from 1966-68 having signed from East Fife. He was off course a centre forward and scored an impressive 16 goals in 38 appearances.
He is one of a small group of Berwick Rangers players whom we can truly call "legends"
Our thoughts are off course with his family and friends.
RIP George.

Thats it

it done then, Annan aside off course. In some ways I'm happy to see the season done, most of it to do with our form since Christmas, but remembering off course the progress that has been made this season. The ship is much steadier, the projected lose since the seasons start is hugely down on what was envisaged and everyone is much happier. Don't forget as well if you were around at the start of the season you witnessed a new club record, that doesn't happen every season now does it. Yesterdays game was pretty much a non event but the awards were dished out in the Black & Gold after the game. Our one, the Trusts, went to Mark Peat and I had a good crac with Jimmy Crease for a while to, interesting stuff. Disappointing that both the club and manager received anonymous letters containing threatening bile, naming Livingston as a source. They really are a detestable shower aren't they?
Finally I see that in the close season Gala Fairydean are laying a 3G pitch at Netherdale thanks to a grant of £450k from Scottish Borders Council. What chance we can get something similar from Northumberland Cooncul.....ahem

Friday 23 April 2010

We now

know what has to be down for the last two games, or I think we do anyway. We need to win our last two and Queens Park either need to loose both, that would be easy, or they need to draw them both. They could win one of the two as long as we can turn round a five goal difference as well. We must win tomorrow and then look and really hope that they have dropped something. All pretty mind boggling I know but I suppose the fact that with just two games to go and we still have something to go for is great if a wee bit surprising given our form since Christmas. We need as many as possible at Shielfield tomorrow, lets keep the pressure on the Spiders, is their last game against Forfar?

Heard today

about the volcano like reaction to a reference made in last Saturdays match report from the Livingston Berwick game. The match report was the one in the Berwick Advertiser today and apparently the Daily Ranger, itself a bastion of accurate football reporting, made mention of it the other day, the same report having been on our club site since the start of the week. Apparently the alarm was raised by those in charge at Almondvale over this piece of heinous reporting, and if those in charge at Hampden can get their snouts out of the trough any time soon they will give it a serious look. To what do I refer I hear you ask. Well, in the match report the atmosphere during the game and after the final whistle, given they had just won the league, was described as being "as flat as a witches tit! Now, given that I was at the game I can tell you it wasn't as good as that. I remember more atmosphere in ma granny's hoose, and she was tea total and hated anyone under 75 and noise! A serious matter indeed and if I can stop smiling anytime soon I'll give it the due deference it deserves. There, done it, that's all its getting from me and I'm still laughing......

Game 42
Eyemouth United 1-1 Stirling University

Popped over to Warner Park Eyemouth last night and took in a fairly good game where the Fishermen a quited themselves well against the league leaders. They put up a fairly gutsy performance in defense against the, at times, slicker moving students but they got a draw and deserved it. Stirling will probably confirm their promotion this Saturday but it was good to see the Berwickshire side get a point in a performance that often belied their league position. The night itself was dambed cold, if you know the park you'll know its pretty much open to anything the elements choose to throw at it but in the second half the wide died a little which made it a bit better. The game finished in semi darkness but nobody seemed to care. They're made of sterner stuff in the East of Scotland League.

Watched the

Plymouth Newcastle game last night and as expected the Magpies tied the ribbon to the championship trophy and the Pilgrims took the lift downstairs. One thing that did disturb me however was the scenes during, and after the game of.......numerous young, semi naked and extremely blubberous Newcastle fans, who, for a reason that escapes me think the rest of us want to share in their plenty. Not me lads if I want to see the butter mountain I'll go to Luxembourg or somewhere equally ludicrous. Turning to the East of Scotland League there are three games tonight featuring four of the five teams that can still be promoted. I'm pleased to see the way the first division has panned out it's certainly keeping it going to the death.

Monday 19 April 2010

Another footie

week starts, not many left now but for the first time in a few we've no "midweeker" We've two left and the season ends. Personally I'll get proceedings of the mark by watching the Plymouth Newcastle game on Sky. If memory serves Argyle still need points so it's not a "dead rubber" as they say. Watched most of the tele games yesterday, the weather keeping me out of the garden, and one thing did strike me, Arsenal are a spent force. They lost to an Africa/South American select, well thats the way it seemed, mind the Gunners are no better, French United. Won't dally too long tonight as I've stuff to get on with.........

Sunday 18 April 2010

Have you

got over yesterdays miss yet? If you were there it might take a wee while longer but it's done and dusted now as I fear is the play off situation. Couldn't help take a look at the remaining fixtures, not ours but predominately Albion and Queens Park. All the influence we can have is beat Rovers next Saturday and then sit back and watch how the others pan out. Remember though that where we are now is one hell of a lot better than where we were not that long ago. Expectation is an inevitable felling in us all and maybe, just maybe mind, this season has produced a bit too much of that in many of us. As a club we are much healthier now and in a much better position to go on from here and build for the future.

Saturday 17 April 2010

What an

afternoon, another gutsy performance against the "Champions" as we finish the season unbeaten against them, but another penalty miss and what a costly one this very well will be. It wasn't even a half decent one either. Our penalty taker must change, granted that is down to those on the park to sort out and mine is only an opinion listened to by few, but no more penalty's by Callaghan. My choice would be Currie, has he signed for next season? We were bunged in the corner of one stand today, but those of us that were there in black & gold, or in my case blue red and white, supported the team well. Mind you if that's Livingston's idea of a party I'll take "ma cairy oot" elsewhere. They have stuttered through and won a league of part timers, the report card must say "will need to do better next term"

Friday 16 April 2010

You going

to Livingston tomorrow? If you are remember to visit a newsagents when you get there and buy a West Lothian Courier which apparently have tokens which will get you in for half price, remember as well they're charging £12 to get in tomorrow, don't want to give them any more than we have to now do we? This is the fourth meeting this season and they still haven't beaten us yet, I'm touching wood when I write that! A win tomorrow would be incredible so lets start with the same team tomorrow Jimmy. We know they can be beaten. Would love to see more of these Paul McMullan runs, they terrorise defenses and in my opinion we don't see nearly enough of them. Lets give em hell.....

Thursday 15 April 2010

Great result

for us last night at Stair Park. The BBC site described the winning goal as 90+5minutes, does that rub it in more, or is it just me! Anyway it keeps things interesting. Our two main protagonists meet this Saturday and next Tuesday so points will be dropped, although I'm resisting the urge to sit down with an abacus and work out the permutations. We go to Livingston on Saturday needing something, but hey, after Tuesday we can go there and beat them. In the true Lions spirit they gave away half price tickets in yesterday West Lothian Courier, interesting to see if that one ups their crowd any, their other schemes have hardly enticed the local populous away from their teles. They're charging 12 quid to get in and apparently 5 more to park at their ground, is that right? Nice to see a few black & gold there to make some noise.

Wednesday 14 April 2010

What a

cracking game and performance at Shielfield last night. That's more good football in ninety minutes than I've seen from Berwick in the last ten games. There was more guts on show last night than watching Cyril Smith in his y fronts. We should have won but the gods weren't quite with us, but never the less we certainly won the moral victory. Good atmosphere as well, surprising what a difference a few extra can make in Shielfield. Can't remember it all but wee Shields was an absolute terrior, McMullans runs were great, I love to see someone running at defences, we've not seen enough of that this season. Mark Peat pulled off some incredible saves and we didn't stoop to their diving tricks. How about Barr's attempt to con the ref, if you're gonna do it son you'll need to spend some of your "full time" and practice. Oh and, I was way of the mark yesterday when I said there were two ex Berwick players involved at Hampden on Sunday, there were actually five. Any idea who they were?

Tuesday 13 April 2010

Biggish game

at Shielfield tonight, both clubs have their own reasons off course and what a joy it would (will) be to win this one. I'm sure all Berwick fans have their own reasons for wanting this win, some might be the same, others may be fairly individual. Which one are you? I certainly know which category i'm in. For a whole load of reasons I'd absolutely love us to win this one but It certainly won't be the end of the world if we don't! Come on Berwick STICK IT RIGHT UP EM...oops sorry, composure retained.
Noticed that Steven Tweed got MOTM in our division, well done to him no problem with that. And finally, I'm too excited to sit still for much longer, did you noticed that Sundays Cup Semi had two ex Berwick players involved. While since that's happened I'd guess, if ever. Right I'm away to get my Berwick top on......

Monday 12 April 2010

Did you

read the Daily Ranger today? They took great pleasure in detailing Saturdays debacle at Hampden, from a Celtic point of view obviously, and giving the weekly salaries of all the Parkhead duds, excuse me I'm looking for a hanky. Money well spent...not. The Lisbon Lions must be shaking their heads. Great stuff from the Dingwall lads though. As far as I'm concerned the occasion was all about them and really shows that shocks in Scottish Football are still possible. I'm old enough to remember real Celtic teams who were feared and respected around Europe. Can you say the same about the present lot?
Are you going to Shielfield tomorrow night? They are bringing two official buses down and hopefully a few more. We may as well get as much into our hardly overloaded coffers as we can. Even a few more might make that somewhere near a four figure sum. Then when we beat them......

Sunday 11 April 2010

What about

the score from Hampden yesterday? That's the kind of score that lights up Scottish football and the last I heard Dundee United were two up so for once we might have an interesting final. Just goes to show, at least in my humble opinion that the old firm are certainly not what they were. What we need now off course is a creditable challenge from someone. Again personally speaking I think it's a good thing if it help make the terminally boring SPL any more competitive. And the second, or should that be the best, score yesterday was from Livingston. Well done the Loons and Livingston now travel south on Tuesday looking to wrap up the league title, that is right isn't it? My hope is that it'll bring a few extra quid into out coffers although Livingston's home crowds, don't know what they've been taking away, have hardly been breaking records. I've said it before, but remember, Livingston is a town of just over 76000. No matter come along, we'll take money of anyone, even you.........

Saturday 10 April 2010

10 minutes

gone and I was looking for something blunt to hack at my wrists. If you were there you know what I mean if not take my word for it. Up till half time it was desperate, really desperate. Into the second half and for once the manager used his subs to some effect and we clawed our way back into the game quite rightly ending up with a point. The referee, can't remember who he was or care for that matter, wasn't adverse to giving the V signs to his Ducket side doubters either, another tosser in charge again, where do they come from, no don't tell me I really don't care. The Loons won at Livingston so does that mean they come here on Tuesday to possibly win the league? I'm far too emotional to do any sums on the matter right now. Something about pints of Blond and Best at lunch time!

Friday 9 April 2010

Couldn't get

into here yesterday as it had apparently taken the huff with me and wouldn't let me in. I reckon it has a female soul, definitely...... Onto something much more important, tomorrows game. What if we win tomorrow, what if. Trouble is, even in the event that that happens we've still put ourselves into a position where we're reliant on results elsewhere. I suppose it's natural after Tuesdays win that we look at things black&gold through more optimistic specs. Think I'll wait till I see how it unfolds at Shielfield tomorrow but to at least start the day properly I'm meeting messers Bell and Cook for a few of Spadges ales in the Pilot.Hope that's not the days highlight however......

Wednesday 7 April 2010

Game 38
Berwick 1-0 Stranraer

We got our win last night which given the way things are going on the park that's all that matters at the moment. As a spectacle large chunks of the game were absolutely shocking. Two teams who struggled to produce anything anywhere near what might be termed "football" with the situation made considerably worse by a totally inept referee who really was out to prove he was the "main man" plus his Ducket side mucker, who if he hadn't been there not a soul would ever have known. But, as I said, the result was all and mathematically we're still in the mix even if I can't help thinking it's still too little to late. Come on lads prove me wrong.

Stranraer game

tonight. This is certainly one to test the die hards. Given the counter attraction on the telly and the fact that our challenge has all but petered out tonights crowd will be interesting. Support off course is what the club/team require so I sincerely hope we can witness something much improved from Saturday. You have to be ever the optimist in this game so I hope that optimism is not to severely tested at Stadion Shielfield tonight. Fully how quickly pain can evaporate in football so I go forward with hope in my heart, no, hold on that's a song........

Monday 5 April 2010

Just back

from a long Easter weekend away where I gave up some of my valuable time, and cash off course, to take in our game at Station Park. What a waste of time that turned out to be. We lay down and died for Forfar in a game that we were lucky to get nil. You'll be as aware as I am that that means that Forfar have beaten us four times this season without us managing to score a single goal. We're all aware football is about opinions and you will no doubt have yours, but I'm afraid mine is that that situation is not good enough. The team must do better or changes must be made. I know, much easier said than done, but they must be left in no doubt that what was served up on Saturday is not acceptable. Our season is effectively over and thoughts must now turn to next term. Sad indeed.......

Thursday 1 April 2010

Went to

the Football Club AGM at Shielfield last night representing the Trusts shareholding. We now have in excess of 67000 shares so it's always worth keeping abreast of what's going on. As it happened there was nothing contentious, changed days eh, with the business being concluded in 12 minutes, that's the best kind of AGM for me! An interesting piece of news for me, given my interest in East of Scotland football, was the confirmation that an application has been submitted to run a reserve team in that league next season. As far as I'm concerned it's fingers crossed.
On a different note Livingston can lift the Third Division title this weekend at Annan if they defeat Harry Cairney’s men and other results go their way. Should Albion Rovers fail to win at East Stirling and Forfar not defeat us at Station Park they would be unable to match Livi’s points total of 67.
If all three sides win a Livingston triumph over Montrose at Almondvale next Tuesday would see them crowned Champions at that point. We all wish them well......don't we??
