Todays game

Well...... what can you say about todays game. 4 goals away from home and nowt to show. Two things that that were obvious to the watching throng, of which about a dozen and a half were in black & gold, was that Barclay must learn to come of his line, and the defence must learn to close down attackers. Both were sadly absent today. Work to be down in training I'm afraid. As far as I'm concerned to score 4 times on your travels you must be looking for a result.

Grand grub though, bridie & bovril for 2 quid, not bad eh? For those concerned next Saturdays talk in at the golf club has been confirmed. Can't remember the times though. Keep checking the clubs temporary site no doubt it;ll be up on there.

Tomorrows game

Station Park Forfar tomorrow in a game I think we can win, even after Tuesday night! It's one of my favourite away grounds, and there's also the Bridies. I'd like to see us continue our mini run and close the gap on Albion. Don't know how healthy the away support will be. Its funny how one result can have a knock on effect on the number travelling to the next away game, we'll see, hopefully I won't be the only one!

Last nights meeting

Quite a constructive meeting last night. Our guests were three ladies from the speedway, including one of the new co-owners. I think it was fairly useful in everyone getting to know each other, and the promise of joint initiatives was taken away. We also voted to assist the Football Club with a couple of fiscal problems, which we fortunately were in a position to do. Things remain tight fiscally, so all the help we are able to give the club can only be a good thing.

Got a copy of the Blogs "viewing" figures yesterday, and they make interesting reading. Thankfully they're on the up, which is good. Also interesting to note that in the last few weeks visitors from 18 countries have looked in. One of the more unusual one's if you like, was from Iran. Glad to have you with us, keep on looking in!

Day after the night after etc......

Reflected on last nights game today, unfortunately it doesn't make it any better. Mind, they are unbeaten in 8 apparently and that puts us unbeaten in 3, 2 of them against clubs in play off. The pitch stood up not to bad, but we need continued dry weather as none of the required work has been done yet.

Trust Board meeting tonight, we're meeting one of the new owners of the speedway, just as an introduction for all. We're all in the "Shielfield" thing together, so it certainly can't help to get to know each other. Nobody wants to rule out any joint projects for the future.
Last night

Went to the game at Shielfield last night, what a load of crap. Some of the worst football I've seen from grown men in a long time, both sides included by the way. Only consolation was we didn't loose but in my opinion certainly lost two points, but I suppose some might say we didn't deserve any.

I've included a match report from Saturdays game at Stenny written by fellow Trust board member Dave Cook to remind us that we can actually play football......

A Fraser McLaren wonder goal gave a resurgent Berwick Rangers side a deserved victory on the Ochilview plastic against championship contenders Stenhousemuir on Saturday. McLaren's ability and commitment has never been in doubt, but his goal scoring record is poor for a striker. With Rangers turning up the heat on the home side, and a mere nine minutes left on the clock, those concerns were forgotten when he directed a brilliant 45 yard lob over Warrior's keeper Renton, leaving him spreadeagled in the rigging with a face the colour of a lion tamers' waistcoat.
Rangers have won their last two encounters with the Warriors, reinforcing the widely-held view that Cowdenbeath apart, there isn't a lot separating the teams from second place to ninth position, serial wooden-spooners Elgin City excepted. With ex-Gers manager John Coughlin at the helm, and with four former Rangers players in their starting line up,defeat was a bitter pill for the home side to swallow.More importantly for the Black and Gold,it signals a return to form and builds nicely on the point earned at play-off hopefuls Montrose.
The sixty Rangers fans who travelled to Larbert were in for a couple of surprises of their own when the Gers' starting eleven was announced.Keeper McGurk, who had been carrying a knock for a few weeks, was replaced by debutant Jamie Barclay,ex-East Stirling, and former Dundee player Eddie Mearns kept his place in midfield despite collecting a red card at Montrose.
I've had more fun lancing boils than watching the opening quarter of an hour, but the game spluttered into life in the 16th minute when Dalziel had a goal chalked off after Barclay lost the ball in the box.It looked to be a lucky escape, but one that Rangers failed to learn from, with Barclay and Mearns the fall guys when the Warriors finally took the lead in the 28th minute,Dalziel slotting home the loose ball from 12 yards out.A minute later Shielfield Hall of Fame member Ian Diack missed a sitter, slicing wide from close range after Rangers continued the general sloppiness in clearing their lines.Six minutes before the interval,it was Rangers' turn to feel hard done by,McLaren's close range finish disallowed for an invisible handball after Renton parried Forrest's fierce volley straight to his feet.
Whatever Jimmy Crease said at half-time,it had the desired effect, because Rangers looked like team transformed after the break.Players posted missing in the opening forty-five decided to turn up,and Stuart Callaghan in particular must have been delighted to discover that he had three others playing alonsgide him in midfield. It was'nt all one-way traffic, but after Jordan Smith headed inches wide in the 50th minute,Rangers bossed the game through to the finish. The impressive Callaghan hammered a 20 yard effort off the outside of Renton's psot before going one better in the 67th minute, his corner searing past the keeper for a slightly unusual but extremely welcome equaliser. The goal lifted Rangers and had the opposite effect on Stenhousemuir.Coughlin sides are'nt reknowned for their goalscoring feats, and they wore the look of a team that knew the game was up.With Dillon and Guy battening down the hatches in Rangers' defence, and Gribben showing off some brilliant link-up play,it was Rangers who looked like championship contenders and not the increasingly lame home side. The goals apart,Gribben produced the best moment of the match in the 70th minute, executing a Cruyff-like turn on the edge of the box to leave Ovenstone and Lyle on their backsides.McMenamin just failed to force home the resulting cross.
Five minutes later,McGroarty headed another Callaghan corner off the line with Renton beaten again, but the winner was'nt long in coming. With Rangers on the breakout,McLaren collected the bouncing ball, looked up to see Renton just off his line, and volleyed an inch-perfect lob over the keeper from the edge of the "D" on the halfway line.Pure genius, and thoroughly deserved. What also impressed was the way in which Rangers killed off any hopes Stenhousemuir had of rescuing the game in the time that remained, taking the ball for a walk into the corners and playing with an intelligence that has been missing for far too long.Jimmy Crease has built an increasingly confident and competitive outfit who are a match for anyone in the league on their day.
Barclay 6;Guy 8;Ewart 7;Forrst 6;Dillon 8; Greenhill 2; Callaghan 9;McMenamin 5;Mearns 6; McLaren 7;Gribben 8.

Annan tomorrow night

A quick turn around it seems this week with another game looming large. Annan, a team we have beaten twice this season and the only team not to have scored at Shielfield in the league. On Saturdays evidence can we do it, I'd say so.

Hope tomorrow's gate isn't effected too much by the games on the tele. Hard to see how it won't be. Any chance we can try to avoid these nights, I know its hard with there being so much on the box, but what for example would have been wrong with using tonight?

Saturday 21 February 2009

Great day

What a great result at Stenny this afternoon. First half was crap and we went in 1-0 down at half time with not much hope for the second. Stenny started the second on top, then, gradually we got back into it. Equalised with a goal direct from a corner, then won it with one of the best goals I've seen from Berwick in five years, an absolute peach, the away end was jumping.......

A word on the attendance, just had a look at teletext and they gave something in the 400's. Lucky if there were 300 plus. Same at Montrose a fortnight ago, why do clubs do that. Over 50 Berwick fans mind, that's better.

Bring on Annan on Tuesday night.

Saturdays game

As usual at this time of the week thoughts turn to Saturdays game, at good old Ochiliew. Was remembering how it used to look the other day. They used to have their stand on the same side as the social club. It only ran part way down the side and was fairly tall.

Opposite was a covered terracing where the stand now is and the terracing behind the goal used to be open. The one constant has been the social club, where many a pint has been taken. Have always quite enjoyed a trip to Stenny over the years but can only remember once wandering into town for a pint.

Years ago a group of us got photographed "relaxing" behind the goal, on a sunny afternoon, with the headlines something like Berwick fans enjoy Steny sunshine. Truth of the matter was one to many ales had required yours truly at least to adopt a more horizontal position. Nothing at all to do with the weather!

Nowt happening

Sitting watching the Forfar v Rangers game, so far the Loons aren't disgraced, there's time mind. I remember sitting watch a similar game at Shielfield 7 years ago and counting down the 15 minute chunks. Great result that night, what a pity that didn't give the club the security that it looks like Forfar will get.

Looks like we'll have a fairly busy next few weeks games wise. 2-0 to Rangers now by the way. Now that our 3 postponed games have dates. How is the pitch situation going? Will we get these games on? Not heard anything on that this week so far, anyone know?

Other matters

Been engaging myself in matters other than BRFC recently, a change being as good as a rest etc. I'm researching information on Duns Football Club in season 1072/73 and the Scottish Cup.

It's turning out to be an interesting and somewhat absorbing project. The more I find out the more I want to find out. It seems to have a way of growing outwards, which is almost beyond my control.

No matter, its enjoyable, and hopefully will be worthwhile in the long run. Funny how you sometimes loose your way in some things, when I change can do the world of good.

Sites

Pleased to see Paul keeping everyone up to date with how the new official site is coming along and what the intentions are. Of most important is the chance for fans to get their say in now with what they'd like to see. Great chance, so take in now or forever etc!

Just had a look at our Trust site as well. What a great addition the members map is. Great idea, which I must say I've not seen before.

I'm always banging on about communication, especially in the present day, when instant news is the norm. No disrespect to the local press, but news once a week isn't enough any more.

New week

Hopefully a new week will bring better fortune to our club, in that I off course mean a drying of the Shielfield Park surface allowing the remedial work required to be undertaken. Then, hopefully, we can get back to a "normal service"at Shielfield and allow the rebirth of our club to continue.

I notice we have a friendly up at Dunbar tomorrow night, for those of you that can make it. On Wednesday I'll be holding my breath for our friends at Forfar in the hope that they can get their tie against Rangers played and pocket some much needed dosh. Good luck.

Just back

After a technical blip yesterday I'm back. It was a bit like when your married I suppose, you sometimes get locked out and your not quite sure why, remember these times, if not you've never been married!
Bigger problems abound however. Anyone living in the fair Borough today will have been witness to snow, tons of it. If Saturdays game hadn't been in doubt already for other reasons, today has surely seen the end of it.

Tuesday 10 February 2009

Much to do

I'm aware that amongst all the other jobs that require "priority" effort is being put in to securing a new kit supplier for next season. I believe that progress is being made which is great news, add to that the news on shirt etc sponsors and things are moving in that direction.

I paid a visit to the Montrose club shop on Saturday and must say their selection of all attire Montrose FC was quite impressive for a club at our level.

Something similar at Shielfield next season would be great, go for it lads.

Monday 9 February 2009

Saturdays game

I don't normally give Saturdays game too much thought at this stage of the week, however, neither do I normally hear that Saturdays game may be doubt on a Monday.

I know the board are doing all things possible to change this, but sometimes, even where there's a will, there isn't always a way.

Sad situation indeed......

Sunday 8 February 2009

Remembering

Felt sorry for or friends at Station Park today. Those of us that remember our situation 7 years ago will empathise. A lot of effort went into eventually getting our game on after a postponement. Fortunately we still got the game televised and the money that went with it.

I hope Forfar get the same rub of the green. Clubs at our level need every break going.

Saturday 7 February 2009

Todays game

A bright afternoon in Montrose wasn't reflected in the fare served up I'm afraid. From our point of view it was a good point with a great goal from Berwick's top performer on the day Graham Guy.

Big Tweed bossed most of what happened but a point from the fourth placed club done for the dozen or so black & gold in attendance. On that subject at 3 minutes to 3 there were 140 in the ground and I've just seen on the BBC site the crowd as 318, where the rest were I don't know.

Well done to Berwick who battled away, the trialist from Dundee should have done enough to merit another shot.

Friday 6 February 2009

Montrose tomorrow

At least we should be safe tomorrow on their "all weather" surface, unless off course we have a "Northampton" situation. You may have read that the surface at Sixfields in midweek was fine, but that old chestnut "health & safety" reared its head. The approaches to the stadium were deemed far too dangers for mere mortals to negotiate.
Never heard of the High Street, or any other street for that reason being closed for a similar reason.
Montrose, make sure there's plenty of salt on Wellington Street tonight and tomorrow!

Thursday 5 February 2009

Club website

Just noticed the start of a new club site. There's a new news page on the address and Paul Smith is working hard on the rest of the stuff.
Much needed and essential in my opinion for our "new" club. Well done Paul.

Wednesday 4 February 2009

Quiz

A quiz is being planed to run through a number of months this year. A few of us are presently putting the details together under the Trust banner. Hopefully it will prove popular in the town and maybe beyond.
Still early stages, however details when finalised will appear in the local press and on the Trust website, keep your eye's peeled!

Tuesday 3 February 2009

Progression

As the new board start to assess just how much has to be done its a pity they've been landed with another unexpected red herring in the shape of good old Shielfield.
It appears a false economy was made which now necessitates urgent and possibly expensive remedial action before a week on Saturday.
Lets hope a practical solution can be found that won't take important finance from elsewhere.
Pity the buyers of a football club don't get the same info as the buyers of a house get ain't it?

Sunday 1 February 2009

Results

Yesterdays results had the two clubs above and below us both loosing. No change there then. At the top Cowden won again. After having seen all the teams in our division they looked the best. As they say the league table never lies, we've a fair scope for improvement there then!

Is it too late for this season, probably, but there again......
